Cancers
Head and neck cancers often occur because of specific risk factors, such as smoking cigarettes or cigars, chewing tobacco, use of snuff, alcohol abuse, or exposure to HPV. Genetic factors also figure in, however, as well as cancer occurring with no prior family history. Fortunately, many of these cancers are readily curable when caught early, and most produce early symptoms that are identifiable by doctors.
The most effective treatment is removal of the cancer, followed possibly by other treatments, such as radiation or chemotherapy. Surgery generally involves removing the cancerous tissue as well as some normal tissue around the growth, and in some cases lymph nodes in the neck.
Not every growth, change or condition indicates cancer. However, it is advisable to recognize certain symptoms and talk to a doctor if you are concerned.
Possible signs of cancer
- A lump in the neck that lasts for more than two weeks
- Unexplained hoarseness or a lingering change in your voice
- An ulcer or swelling in the mouth that lasts more than two weeks or is accompanied by a lump in the neck
- Unexplained blood in your saliva or phlegm
- Sudden discomfort or difficulty swallowing
- Changes in the skin, especially on areas that receive more sun exposure, or changes in a mole
- Pain in the ear when swallowing or a persistent dull earache
